Becca and Kathy first met at a party that was hosted through a mutual friend in October 2008. It is very likely that their first words to each other were: "Oh, so you would 'totally do' P!NK?" At the time, Becca was seated in a very raggedy chair in the corner of the party, and Kathy was dancing in the center of the room. Becca will later admit to being curious about the straight girl who liked P!NK, but was also distracted and much more interested in enjoying the scene. Kathy, however, was intrigued by the powerfully spoken, intelligent, friendly girl-in-the-chair. She found several excuses to talk to Chair Girl the rest of the night. As the party dwindled, Kathy left, but her thoughts couldn't escape the encounter.
Over the next 8 months, Kathy and Becca wouldn't speak to each other much. There were occasional hilarious messaging moments on Facebook (thanks Mark Zuckerberg!), and a very awkward in-person run in the basement of the OSH building on campus on the University of Utah. Fast forward to June 2009. Kathy was in Logan working as an event coordinator for the National MS Society. Readying for bed around 1am, Kathy's cell phone blinked; the text was from Chair Girl. Butterflies in stomach, Kathy texted back to say hello. The following day at work, Kathy resolved to see where this would lead, dealing with the bigger picture (hi, I'm gay) later if needed. Driving home from Logan that afternoon, there was never a doubt in her head: Kathy was going to see where this ended up.
A coffee date was set for July 3rd. Kathy drove to Bountiful after sneaking away early from a family get together ("I'm going to meet a 'friend'"). As everything in B-Town is closed on Sundays, we grabbed iced coffee from the McDonald's on 500 West and sipped them while lounging in a park near the Bountiful Rec Center. Conversation flowed, a connection was made, and the rest, as they say, is history in the making.
